The Founder’s Journey: From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
Lito Alcantra grew up in a humble farming family in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Determined to create a better life, he earned a civil engineering degree from the Mapua Institute of Technology through a scholarship.
When his previous company was sold in 1979, Lito took a leap and founded Group Builders, Inc., using an initial investment from Charlie Cook. With a small team, he completed their first major project, the 17-story Chandelier Condominium, in just ten months.
The early years were filled with challenges, but Lito’s commitment to quality and timely delivery helped Group Builders establish a reputation as a dependable contractor, earning a loyal client base and steady growth.
Group Builders, Inc. rose to become one of Hawaii’s Top 25 Contractors and ranked among the Top 600 Specialty Contractors in the U.S. In 2008 and 2009, it was recognized as one of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work.
